Texas Health Huguley Hospital Fort Worth South is thrilled to welcome Leah Binder, President and CEO of The Leapfrog Group, along with Jen Bowring, Executive Director for the American Diabetes Association (ADA) in North Texas, and Rajesh K. Garg, MD, Professor of Medicine at David Geffen School of Medicine, The Lundquist Research Institute Head of Diabetes Section and leader on the American Diabetes Association (ADA) Standards of Care Committee, on Tuesday, November 19, 2024. This exclusive visit, on Diabetes Awareness Month, aims to recognize the exemplary diabetes care program at the hospital. Earlier this year, Texas Health Huguley was one of 17 hospitals nationwide to receive the designation of Recognized Leader in Caring for People Living with Diabetes. This prestigious honor is awarded to hospitals that demonstrate innovative, patient-centered care for individuals managing diabetes.

The two-hour visit, beginning at 10 a.m., will allow Binder and ADA team to learn about Texas Health Huguley’s diabetes program and meet with hospital leaders and staff to discuss the program’s vision, outcomes and patient impact. This visit offers a unique opportunity for The Leapfrog Group and ADA to witness firsthand the hospital’s commitment to improving health outcomes and delivering compassionate, evidence-based care to those living with diabetes.

"We are excited to visit Texas Health Huguley, where their leadership caring for their patients living with diabetes makes them a national role model,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO, The Leapfrog Group, an independent national patient safety watchdog. " We are thrilled to recognize hospitals leading the charge in improving patient safety for people living with diabetes through this initiative with the American Diabetes Association.”

Additionally, a guided tour of Texas Health Huguley’s facilities is scheduled, allowing Binder and the entire ADA team to observe the patient care environments and interact with members of the healthcare team.

“We are deeply honored to receive this recognition, which reflects our commitment to providing comprehensive, compassionate care for individuals living with diabetes,” said Angela Hodges, Diabetes Center of Excellence Manager at Texas Health Huguley Hospital. “Our dedicated team is passionate about improving patient outcomes through innovative approaches and personalized care, and we are excited to share our journey with leaders like Ms. Binder, Ms. Bowring and Dr. Garg.”

In addition to receiving the designation, Texas Health Huguley’s diabetes program was also selected by Leapfrog and the Johns Hopkins University Armstrong Institute for Patient Safety and Quality to present one of only 18 posters at the 2024 Leapfrog Annual Meeting and Awards Dinner this December on the topic of Inpatient Diabetes Program.

About the Award

The first-of-its-kind designation program evaluates hospitals based on their care for patients with diabetes from admission through discharge. The program operationalizes the ADA’s globally recognized guidelines for the treatment of patients with diabetes, the Standards of Care in Diabetes—2024, along with Leapfrog standards for excellence in hospital safety and quality. The program aims to counter the heightened safety risks faced by approximately 8 million people living with diabetes who are hospitalized each year.

Recognized hospitals provide safe, high-quality care for people living with diabetes by implementing blood glucose testing and hypoglycemia protocols, specialized preparation for inpatient surgery, meal and insulin regimen planning, and robust discharge planning for high-risk patients with diabetes among other things.
