Texas Health Huguley Hospital has achieved Level III Trauma Designation, a milestone that strengthens the hospital’s ability to provide advanced, life-saving care to critically injured patients.

Achieving this designation means Texas Health Huguley meets rigorous standards set by the American College of Surgeons (ACS) and the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS). It ensures that the hospital has trauma surgeons on staff 24/7, allowing patients to receive high-quality emergency care closer to home.

“This designation reflects our commitment to providing the highest level of trauma care for the community we serve daily,” said Dr. Ronny Ford, Chief Medical Officer at Texas Health Huguley, “Having trauma surgeons available around the clock means that when every second counts, our patients have access to expert care without the need for transfer to another facility.”

A Collaborative Effort for Advanced Trauma Care

The journey to Level III Trauma Designation involved a hospital-wide effort, including:

  • A comprehensive review of trauma care protocols and the implementation of ACS and DSHS requirements.
  • Multi-department collaboration to streamline processes and enhance patient care.
  • The addition of trauma surgeons to the medical staff, ensuring 24/7 surgical coverage.
  • Extensive staff training, including Trauma Nursing Core Courses (TNCC), Emergency Nursing Pediatric Courses (ENPC), and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS).
  • Mock trauma scenarios to improve response times and patient outcomes.

Elevating Services for the Community

With this designation, along with the addition of 10 cardiologists and two cardiothoracic surgeons in late 2024, Texas Health Huguley strengthens its commitment to providing advanced care close to home. These enhancements mean faster treatment, improved patient outcomes and greater peace of mind for the community.

To maintain and build upon this designation, the hospital will continue to evaluate trauma cases, update protocols and provide ongoing education to staff. Additionally, Texas Health Huguley is preparing for new state trauma requirements in 2025, ensuring continued excellence in emergency care.
